Summary

This is a fellowship targeted to scholars in the social, economic, political, and behavioral sciences who want dedicated time and space to focus on data analysis, writing, and deep research. It is a residential program based in New York City, where selected scholars live in residence at the foundation’s headquarters, usually for ten months (September through June), though there are also options for half‑year visits.

Eligibility leans toward those who are well past PhD completion (at least two years beyond). Applicants from faculty, non‑profit research organizations, government, or similar institutions may qualify, particularly if their background or role supports strong scholarly work. The grant/fellowship support includes working space (office), computers, software, access to academic journals and data resources, and salary support. The salary portion can reach up to $150,000 for a full year (or about $75,000 for a half‑year), covering up to roughly half of a scholar’s academic year salary when other funding sources are unavailable.

Projects proposed should align with the foundation’s priority research areas (for example, inequality, race and ethnicity, future of work, behavioral and decision making, immigration) though there’s occasionally room for innovative work outside those domains if it contributes insight relevant to U.S. social conditions.

Applications typically require a proposal of about five pages (excluding references and figures), an abbreviated CV, and adherence to formatting guidelines. Applications are submitted through an online portal with deadlines usually toward the end of June for fellowships starting in September.

In short, this program is ideal for scholars who want to pause teaching or other duties, concentrate on writing or analyzing data, in an intellectually rich environment, with financial and logistical support, all while contributing to research that has social policy, inequality, or behavioral/social science implications in the U.S.
