According to the New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey, 40% of high school students reported being in a physical fight at least once in the past year, highlighting the critical need for effective intervention strategies.
In New Mexico, educators and community leaders are often ill-equipped to address the nuances of youth violence as it fails to incorporate local cultural contexts. Many school staff members serve diverse classroom environments, including a significant percentage of Native American and Hispanic students. Yet, traditional training programs frequently overlook these cultural perspectives, leading to ineffective prevention strategies that do not resonate with the populations they are meant to serve.
This grant initiative seeks to provide culturally relevant violence prevention training tailored to the stakeholders involved in education and youth services in New Mexico.
