Grant Overview

Bridging Capacity Gaps in New Mexico’s Outreach for Medication-Assisted Recovery

New Mexico's healthcare landscape is characterized by its unique capacity constraints, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The state has one of the highest substance use disorder rates in the nation, compounded by a shortage of healthcare providers. According to the New Mexico Department of Health, nearly 12% of all New Mexicans have experienced substance use disorder, and many face barriers accessing treatment.

Individuals seeking help with substance use disorders in New Mexico often encounter stigma and limited access to resources, particularly in remote communities where pharmacy services are sparse. This lack of access greatly affects recovery outcomes, making it imperative for pharmacies to step in as critical access points for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs that can facilitate recovery.

The Pharmacy Leadership Scholars research grant seeks to bolster outreach programs specifically designed to provide medication-assisted treatment through local pharmacies. By granting close to $50,000 in 2021 to innovative pharmacy practices, this initiative focuses on enhancing the capacity of pharmacists to deliver MAT while overcoming barriers such as community stigma and limited communication about available services.

Addressing substance use disorder in New Mexico is crucial, considering the significant public health implications. Improved access to MAT not only supports individual recovery journeys but also addresses broader community health challenges, reducing the economic burden on affected families and the state. By streamlining pathways for obtaining treatment, local pharmacies can significantly impact recovery rates and improve overall health outcomes.

The implementation of outreach programs funded through the grant will focus on training pharmacists to effectively engage with at-risk populations, offer counseling services, and expand their roles in the recovery process. These efforts will enhance service delivery in rural areas, making essential resources more approachable and available, ultimately fostering a more comprehensive approach to addressing substance use disorders in New Mexico.
