New Mexico has a unique educational landscape, with a significant percentage of its student population identified as Native American. Historically, Indigenous students have faced hurdles in accessing quality education that respects their cultural heritage, contributing to lower educational attainment rates compared to their peers. For instance, only 51% of Native American students in New Mexico graduated high school on time in 2020, reflecting disparities in resources and support.
The primary groups affected by the lack of culturally relevant education are Native American students across the state's various tribes and communities. Many of these students experience a disconnect from traditional STEM education, which often fails to incorporate cultural perspectives or relevant local contexts. This disconnect can negatively impact student engagement and achievement levels, as many feel that their identities and knowledge systems are not valued or included in the curriculum.
In response to these challenges, the funding initiative is designed to develop STEM education programs that weave Native cultural perspectives into learning experiences.
